The combination of technologically focused and practising members and social-theorist/creative members in the CCM group means that we have a grounded approach to communication, culture and media in the sense that we can draw on a long tradition of thinkers and writers in the field and yet remain aware of important modern developments, particularly in technology, that change the way we interact with each other and with organisations. The "Ami" project is a mobile-based game with a difference. International researchers, teachers and programmers are working together on this language and culture experience, to be played in six real-world cities throughout Europe – including Barcelona and Bradford! AMICITIAS stands for "Ambient Intelligence as a Compelling Instructional Tool for Interlinguistic and Intercultural Skills". More info is available on the Ami website and the project blog.

The Informatics Research Institute takes a prime position in the life of the School of Computing, Informatics and Media. There is a strong spirit of innovation in the school due to the long experience of leading-edge research in both core computer science and in collaborative interdisciplinary work at the boundaries between computing and application areas that are also dynamic research fields within the University.
We currently have a number of research students working in various disciplines throughout the Institute.
Notable strengths include computer/mobile networks, image recognition, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, computer graphics/games, data mining, new/digital media and studies of the Sun.
